We all want to know the future of Internet… our future! And, if we are talking about an expert on this…. That’s Vint Cerf: the “Father of the Internet†and one of the world’s leading computer scientists. Fortunately for us, he remains energetically engaged in debates on what lies ahead for the Internet.
In an interesting lecture at the Singularity University, he explained how he created the first Internet, and he also gave an overview of the situation of the Internet today and in the future.
We invite you check out this interesting informative video!
Some of the main topics of the video are:
The importance of IPv6
IPv6 is short for “Internet Protocol Version 6″. IPv6 is the “next generation” protocol designed to replace the IPv4, the current version Internet Protocol (Internet Protocol Version 4). Under IPv6, each address has 128 bits and so provides 340 trillion, trillion, trillion different addresses.
How mobility and mobiles impact the Internet
There are 3.5 billions Mobiles and counting! Interestingly, when using mobiles, people mostly request information about where they are! So Text/web access, Geo-location based services and navigation systems, among others are becoming essential to localize the search that they are doing.
The development of Internet-enabled devices
We are going to see many devices in the Net. We can even see many of them connected to the internet today! For instance we are going to have: WebTV, Personal Digital Assistants, Video games, picture frames, washing machine, surf boards, refrigerator, automobiles, clothing, universal remote controls, sensor networks, etc… all of them connected to the Net.
The need for cloud computing standards and Cloud collaboration
Cerf explains the importance of multiple data centers, dynamic capacity sharing, inter-cloud interactions (how to refer to other clouds, how to protect clouds, etc); but, there are still many research problems nowadays.
The growing Asian prominence online
North American population won’t grow dramatically in the future, so there is no doubt that the Asian population will be the dominant user population of the Net, according to Vint Cerf.
If you want more info, just watch the video… Cerf explains a lot of uses of the Internet for the future… he even talks about interplanetary Internet! Enjoy it.
About Vinton G. Cerf
